Intent

The GME Planning program provides support for hospitals, medical schools, and community-based health centers in the state interested in creating a new residency program with first-year residency positions. The program encourages new partnerships between applicants and existing GME programs.

 

Eligibility

Texas entities that are a hospital, a medical school, or a community-based, ambulatory patient care center and propose a strategy and work plan to develop new nationally accredited GME programs with first-year residency positions. Eligible Applicants may partner with a sponsoring institution or an existing GME program for the purpose of planning a new GME program.

All submittals must be complete (inclusive of required signatures, acknowledgments, required attachments, etc.) and received by the posted due date. Incomplete and late submittals will not be considered for award.

Awards will be made on a competitive basis, and only one application will be considered for possible award per eligible applicant.

The GMEPPG was established in 2013 by the 83rd Texas Legislature and codified by Texas Education Code, Sections 58A.001 through 58A.022, Programs Supporting Graduate Medical Education.

Impact

From 2014 to 2023, as part of the Graduate Medical Education Expansion initiative, Planning and Partnership Grant awards have supported the establishment of 33 new residency programs and the creation of 275 new first-year residency positions across the state. An additional 13 programs are expected to begin in 2025.
