Nursing Innovation Grant Program

Intent

The Nursing Innovation Grant Program (NIGP) is established to fund grant projects that support innovation in nursing education programs. Funding will be used to support the development of innovative projects in nursing education that either develop competency-based nursing curricula for pre- licensure programs, increase clinical sites and preceptors, especially in rural areas, or develop pathways in nursing education with stackable credentials from certified nurse aid to a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

Eligibility

Texas institutions of higher education (IHEs), or Texas independent higher education institutions as defined in Texas Education Code 61.003, that offer a prelicensure nursing education program and are approved by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON). Only programs with full approval from the BON, as designated in Texas Administrative Code, Title 22, Section 215.4 are eligible applicants.

Application Information

The NIGP is a competitive grant program.

Applications submitted must develop innovative projects in prelicensure nursing programs that increase clinical sites or preceptors, develop stackable credentials in nursing education programs, or replicate a previously funded NIGP project designed to increase clinical nursing faculty or preceptors, or clinical sites. Eligible projects:

  • May create new projects or replicate and expand an existing project,
  • Must be in alignment with BON professional Nursing Education regulations, Chapter 215, Part II of Title 22 to the Texas Administrative Code, and
  • Shall name one project director with administrative and practical experience who will be responsible for implementing and overseeing the NIGP-funded project and who is a full-time educator, including tenure and non-tenure.

This program is authorized and appropriated by the 89th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, through the General Appropriations Act, Article III, Strategy D.1.11, THECB Rider 52. The NIGP is administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s (THECB) general provisions for agency grant programs: Texas Administrative Code, Title 19, Part 1, Chapter 10, Subchapter A.

Impact

The NIGP is a new grant program per eighty-eighth Texas Legislature Regular Session. The initial grant program is designed to support the goal of innovation in nursing education programs to increase the state’s nursing workforce pipeline.
