The GME Expansion Program was established by the 83rd Texas Legislature, Regular Session, to provide funding to enable new or existing nationally accredited Graduate Medical Education residency programs in Texas to increase the number of first-year residency positions. The program helps support the Texas goal of having 10% more first-year entering residency positions than Texas medical school graduates. The GME Expansion Program has supported the creation of 508 new first-year year residency positions between 2014 and 2023.
