The proposed study will target preschool children living along the Texas-Mexico border because of the higher rates of poverty, obesity, diabetes and hypertension than the general U.S. population. A study conducted by a member of this team (Dr. X Wang) in a school district along the Texas-Mexico border showed that the obesity rate was 28.7% among 1st and 3rd grade students.1 This is twice as high as that reported for U.S. children.
