This contract will develop a surface acoustic wave sensor system (sensor and associated wireless communication devices and software) that can be embedded into an EHMR and FFR for the real-time measurement of fit. Performance requirements of the developed sensor system include: 1. Ability to simultaneously monitor particle concentrations inside and outside of the EHMR and FFR, provide a real-time fit factor, and ability to create an instant warning when failures of fit occur to minimize hazardous exposures when respirator leakage occurs. 2. Ability to monitor temperature and humidity in real time with commercially available sensors. 3. Miniaturization by a Micro Electrical Mechanical System (MEMS) technique, which makes it feasible to embed the proposed sensor in the EHMRs, therefore, more wearable/portable and effective compared to the conventional PortaCount® or CPCs. 4. Design and fabrication of novel PVDF-based soft SAW sensors which can be embedded in curve surfaces. Such sensors will have more flexibility and can be deployed in a wider area.
