1.1.1 (SAM); University of North Texas (UNT) and collaborators in Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, the PI institution) will pursue research on materials and fabrication of advanced polymer/carbon fiber (CF) composites for light-weighting and sensing multifunctionalities.The specific proposed tasks for UNT are: 1. Simulation and computational studies of the relationship between mechanical performance, stability, polymer composition options, and interfacial reactions. Establish process-structure-property relationships of the polymer/fiber composites, and evaluate interfacial failure mechanisms of the printed structures using finite element analysis (FEA). 2. Incorporate and test sensor-embedded polymer/carbon fiber composites with 3D printing. Design and demonstrate multimaterial 3D printing to incorporate in-situ and embedded sensors with the concept of printing vehicle components that can be monitored with stress and time.
