Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: White-tailed Deer Population Parameters and Large Mammal Surveys on East Foundation Properties

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: East Foundation

Program Title: none

SAMS 1.1.1 Using assistance from students representing university wildlife programs in Texas, we will capture white-tailed deer on East Foundation properties using a net-gun fired from a helicopter during 8 days (4 weekends) in October and November, 2019. We will sample nutritive quality of plant species that are preferred by white-tailed deer. We will deploy 19 store-onboard GPS collars at the Coloraditas unit of San Antonio Viejo to collect data on deer resource selection and movements relative to grazing and companion coyote movements study. We will also fly transects in a helicopter during February 2020 to conduct spatially explicit surveys of large mammals on East Foundation properties. We will also incorporate radio-collared deer and mark-resight analyses to improve population estimates derived from aerial surveys. Comparisons of morphologic and demographic parameters, and population estimates across East Foundation properties and with deer populations in the region with different management objectives will provide insight into the ecology and management of white-tailed deer in southern Texas rangelands.
