Note:

While many STEM-related studies provide a foundation for how to recruit and retain diverse students, our project is transformative by building a holistic teacher-student recruiting ecosystem for the geosciences that engages participants in multiple forums and at events throughout the year in order to maintain peer and faculty mentoring relationships. Given that proposed outreach events and the summer bridge program include multiple activities/phases, each of these potentially influential events can be evaluated for impact on geoscience awareness and perceptions across both student and teacher participant groups. Our external evaluation will help guide undergraduate geoscience programs and funding by determining which of the proposed activities have the highest likelihood to increase geoscience enrollment and diversity. Thus, GET Texas will advance the geoscience education literature by: 1) building a model for a geoscience learning ecosystem that includes formal and informal institutions; 2) determining what student and teacher activities are most effective for improving geoscience perceptions; and 3) transforming the undergraduate geoscience recruiting model across rapidly-growing and diverse metro areas.
