The goal is primarily to fund student research stipends that allow them to focus on their research activities in the summer semester, with limited funds used for consumables, travel, and publication expenses but the vast majority used to fund the students stipends directly. By supporting student researchers, we also support the principal investigators they work with allowing much greater research productivity in the department. The generosity of the Robert A. Welch Foundation over the years has allowed a huge number of researchers to gain hands-on experience that guided them towards careers in Chemistry and related fields that use that chemical foundation like Forensic Science (in addition to traditional chemists we train many undergraduate students who go on to use their chemistry training to do forensic work in crime labs and related government labs, and a number have gone on to do analytical chemistry research in the development of forensic methods and assays). A number of students go on to PhD programs each yearand continue their development as chemists, and the feedback we get is that these are excellent graduate students that those programs highly value. The research experience they have gained is invaluable. QUALIFIES AS 1.3.2
