This acreage provides an opportunity to test new and established restoration ecology theories, focusing on the competition between invasive grasses and thornforest seedlings, as well as abiotic factors preventing or retarding seedling establishment and growth. Native thornforest seedling preparation is a major activity of Southmost Preserve at its nursery. Testing of novel techniques to enhance seedling growth and survivability after transplantation can potentially benefit the nursery operation and restoration efforts of TNC, and throughout restoration in in south Texas. A graduate student will be supported and will develop his/her MS thesis based on this restoration ecology/plant physiology study. The support is assured for the first full year, with the possibility to fund subsequent years is dependent on additional funding. The selected student(s) will enroll full time in UTRGV’s Agricultural, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences master’s program working under the supervision of Dr. Alejandro Fierro-Cabo, Principal Investigator (PI).
