Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Investigating the X-ray Extended Emission around the Radio Galaxy 3C 297

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory

Program Title: N/A

This project aims to understand the X-ray extended emission around the radio galaxy 3C297 with Chandra. Salary support is requested in order to set aside a dedicated fraction of time to fully participate in this project and assist with the interpretation of the Chandra data. Importantly, this project uses ancillary data at other wavelengths. Dr. Madrid is charged with leading a program to obtain optical spectroscopy (with the Gemini telescope) of about 40 galaxies in the field of 3C297. This work is significant for the interpretation of the Chandra data, in particular the diffuse X-ray emission around 3C297. The optical data, which aims to contribute to this project, will allow the project team to confirm that 3C297 is part of a galaxy group or galaxy cluster. The funding support requested here would allow for the reduction and analysis of the ancillary optical data for this project in a timely manner.
