This is Restricted Research. This is Research Applied. The long-term goal of this research is to develop an empirically-supported community-based intervention aimed at enhancing service utilization and mental health among Black women. Toward this goal, the objective of the proposed study is to examine Masks Off: Reclaiming the Strong Black Woman (Masks Off) as one culturally-responsive community-based group intervention that may contribute to improved service utilization and mental health among Black women. The specific aims are to: (1) draw on one-on-one interviews to qualitatively examine the community-specific mental health needs and treatment barriers reported in one urban community and (2) use survey methodology to determine the effectiveness of Masks Off in reducing endorsement of the SBW schema and improving help-seeking attitudes and mental health. Results of the qualitative investigation will be used to inform a version of Masks Off curated for the community, and the effectiveness of that intervention will be tested.
