Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Surveillance of Mosquitoes and Arboviruses Including West Nile Virus in the City of Denton during the 2020 Mosquito Season

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: City of Denton

Program Title: N/A

The monitoring of adult mosquito populations will be the mainstay of the surveillance program. Collections will begin in May 2020 and extend through fall 2020. Surveillance programs will be coordinated to concentrate on seasons when mosquito activity is highest (April through October). The exact date for ending surveillance activities will depend on the weather. In past years, the weather has permitted us to monitor mosquito populations through October or November. The goal of the proposed mosquito surveillance is to: Provide an estimate of vector species abundance Identify areas of the city at high-risk Identify larval habitats for targeted control Develop a better understanding of transmission cycles and potential vector species Assess the need for and timing of intervention events. Monitor the effectiveness of control measures and prevention efforts.
