NSF CAREER Award - The PI's long term career goal is to remove barriers to developing natural language processing technologies for new languages, particularly for low-resource languages and languages with small and/or diminishing numbers of speakers. Machine learned models, carefully developed and applied, can make documentation of endangered languages faster, more effective, and more readily useful for language communities. Many classes of models are ill-suited for low-resource languages, given their reliance on large amounts of data; the key insight to this research agenda is to reduce data requirements by injecting models with linguistic knowledge. This CAREER proposal describes investigations into three modeling approaches: a) models enhanced by knowledge of the linguistic properties of individual languages; b) models enhanced by knowledge of relationships between languages; and c) human-in-the-loop models.
