By participating in the Gulf Research Program Early-Career Research Fellowship, I can achieve several long-term professional and personal goals of my own. One of my long-term professional goals is to increase my collaborations across disciplines and subject areas. The connections made through this fellowship will undoubtedly lead to opportunities to learn from other emerging scholars from diverse fields and backgrounds thus increasing the potential for the convergence of new ideas and collaborations. Secondly, buyouts remain relatively understudied despite their growing scope of impact; therefore, we need to further theory and knowledge on how these programs are conducted and their impacts on communities. This fellowship would aid in my pursuits to obtain the funding required for the type of research projects needed to build this foundation knowledge and contribute to enhancing these programs for the residents of the Gulf Coast, a long-term goal of mine. Finally, I see the on-going and long-term need to develop best practices based on empirical study for conducting buyout programs and 17 / 20 the resultant open space management; conversations and policy I hope to directly impact with my research that can be enhanced through participation in this fellowship.
