This research project the UNT team led by Prof. Rostovtsev will perform fundamental research intended for the development of the mercury clocks based on coherent light sources. The team will show feasibility of the clock operation using the fundamentals of Quantum Optics. Using the analytical and numerical tools created by the team for description of coherent phenomena in Rubidium, and Cesium, the team will create a numerical model of the inhomogeneously broaded mercury 199 ion cloud confined in a magnetic trap. The model will allow to find the desirable specification of the laser that can improve the clock operation if compared with the currently operational mercury lamp-based device. A unique compact clock suitable for deep space navigation and flight missions can be created if the mercury clock pumped with coherent polychromatic light is feasible. JPL team will create a conceptual design of the clock.
