The proposed work will investigate extrusion system designs that enable efficient passive control of internal microstructures during 3D printing of composites. Multiple functions of passive control, such as filler alignment, filtering, and heterogeneous distribution, will be pursued. Fiber and particle composites will be manufactured via an extrusion-based 3D printing method with optimized channel designs. Observation and mechanical characterization of printed composites at multi-scales will be performed to evaluate the effect of channel designs and elucidate an understanding of process-structure-property relationships.
