This research project combines two closely related ideas proposed in the original Covid 19 Challenge (ID 61396 and ID 61939) both involving the development of a more accurate and faster virus detection assay. The basic method for both utilizes a relatively new commercial technology, namely paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS), which is a direct ambient ionization method that analyzes samples directly from a sample spotted on a paper substrate with little or no sample preparation, coupled with a mass spectrometer for analysis. As part of this work, a novel synthetic hydrophobic paper material (Teslin® by the PPG Industries), was identified as an efficient substrate in PS-MS for the compounds of interest. Teslin® is a single-layered, microporous polyolefin-silica matrix that is a durable, waterproof, breathable, and lightweight synthetic paper, which allows for direct, sensitive, selective and fast analysis of the sample.
