This is Restricted Research. This project will collect personal narratives and interviews through fieldwork with community members to understand indigenous conceptualizations of COVID-19 and health and sickness, broadly. Through our existing partnerships with student members of the Chin community in Indianapolis, we will recruit and train undergraduate Chin speakers on interviewing and recording techniques. Given the circumstances, all training will be conducted online via Zoom. Interviews will be conducted in Hakha Lai, the community lingua franca, and will focus on how health is defined among Chin populations. We will aim to conduct interviews with approximately 40 members of the Chin community in Indianapolis from May-August 2020. Transcription, translation, analysis, and archiving of data will begin simultaneously and continue on a rolling basis for the duration of the project. The resulting corpus of conversational Hakha Lai--the first ever such corpus to be created--will be archived in CoRSAL (Computational Resource of South Asian Languages, hosted at the University of North Texas).
