Note:

Due to the uncertainty in the simulation or modeling process, the model output is inevitably deviate from the truth and become unreliable. Consequently, traditional simulation-based material design may become unreliable as well. Therefore, robust design in the presence of uncertainty needs to be explored. However, the optimization process with uncertainty could be numerically expensive due to the requirement of a large number of evaluations of the objective function, since additional dimensions in stochastic space increase the complexity of the system. Therefore, it is important to develop and utilize uncertainty quantification (UQ) techniques to reduce the computational cost.
