PROJECT OBJECTIVES - Part 1 1. Optimize and establish friction stir welding conditions for 316LN plate with W-Re tooling * Tool geometry * Applied force/downward force * Travel speed * Tool rotation speed 2. Optimize and establish friction stir welding conditions for high quality welds of 316LN extruded (or Nitronic-50) cable jackets 3. Characterization of the welds for microstructural, mechanical and magnetic properties PROJECT OBJECTIVES - Part 2 The primary objectives of this project include FSW of thinner sections of Nitronic-40 and qualification of the welds developed as detailed below: 1. Establish friction stir welding conditions for developing defect free welds using 0.5” thick Nitronic-40 plates with PCBN tooling * Tool geometry * Applied force * Travel speed * Tool rotation speed 2. Assess the microstructure of the joint by evaluating grain size, inclusions, phase and boundary carbides 3. Investigate magnetic properties of the joints by measuring the relative magnetic permeability across the weld 4. Investigate mechanical properties of the joints by measuring microhardness across the weld
